My story is pretty typical of Broome.  My partner and I arrived in Broome in 1986, a very different Broome from today.  The lifestyle was free and easy with parties in backyards under mango trees with local talent playing throughout the night.  We were blessed with Gunada, the Pigram Brothers, Scrap Metal, the Kuckles to name a few.  They always got everyone dancing or clapping along.

We fell in love with the ancientness of this untouched country and the beautiful beaches and made some really lovely friendships. We both got jobs, travelled a bit of the world and explored everything around us.  We married and had 2 beautiful girls.  Sadly my husband passed away in 2016.

I have been a web designer since 2008 and this blog was started because a friend of mine told a friend of hers, that I could build her a website that not only sold things online but also required a back end where she could login and update information herself.  This type of website is a Content Management System and I had never built one.

So began the evolution of “Broome and the Kimberley”.  This site is a CMS and so I taught myself how to build one, using this site as my training.

Much was happening around this time in Broome with a proposed 30 billion dollar gas hub that Woodside was trying to build at a beautiful location called James Price Point so there any many references to the “No Gas Campaign” that we relentlessly fought for years.  The amount of protesting and lockons etc took its toll on Woodside with workers refusing to work unless clauses were added to pay them whether they could work or not due to protest.  This blew their budget to hell and back.  People power won in the end and James Price Point, a truly remarkable place is safe due to the dedication and time we all put in to save it.

I have now spent over a month revamping this site, removing information that is no longer relevant or interest and have been fixing broken links for businesses that no longer exist.

I hope the new “Broome and the Kimberley” still has something of value to offer tourists who are visiting this part of the world.  I know the History, Dampier Peninsular and Photo Galleries are still pretty popular.  I run this blog for love now and so the highlights for me are the comments I receive from my readers which make the time and effort and cost, worthwhile 💕
