Interesting Stuff – Why is the colour of the soil in the Kimberley red

pindan soil of the kimberleyThe soil of the Kimberley is known locally as pindan and dating back to prehistoric times this area was subject to extended periods of torrential rain which soaked into the earth until it reached the high in iron, bedrock. After the rains, the water slowly rose to the surface and once it made contact with the oxygen laden air, it oxidised and turned to rust which is what the soil is made of.

Interesting Stuff – Planking

PlankingThe internet craze of lying face down in bizarre locations has gone global, and now it has claimed its first victim. Tom Meltzer reports on how it all began .. The rules are simple: you must lie face down, palms flat against your sides, with your feet together and pointing at the floor. Points are awarded for an original location and for the number of spectators and participants involved. You must, of course, have somebody take a photo. Without a photo, you’re just a person lying down. Read more.

Interesting Stuff – Hitler the drugged out farter?

Hitler - the farter? An interesting article about Hitlers “drug addiction” and compulsive “farting”.

The Nazi leader wanted to control the world, but he couldn’t even control his own digestion, and nor could his half-baked doctor, writes Tony Perrottet, adding perhaps a touch more detail than you might think appropriate …

It may sound like a Woody Allen scenario, but medical historians are unanimous that Adolf was the victim of uncontrollable flatulence. Spasmodic stomach cramps, constipation and diarrhea, possibly the result of nervous tension, had been Hitler’s curse since childhood and only grew more severe as he aged. As a stressed-out dictator, the agonising digestive attacks would occur after most meals: Albert Speer recalled that the Führer, ashen-faced, would leap up from the dinner table and disappear to his room.

Interesting Stuff – Should we be stopping more to smell the roses?

Joshua BellIn Washington DC , at a Metro Station, on a cold January morning in 2007, this man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, approximately 2,000 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. After about 3 minutes, a middle-aged man noticed that there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds, and then he hurried on to meet his schedule.

About 4 minutes later:

The violinist received his first dollar. A woman threw money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk.

At 6 minutes:

A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.

At 10 minutes:

A 3-year old boy stopped, but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head the whole time. This action was repeated by several other children, but every parent – without exception – forced their children to move on quickly.

At 45 minutes:

The musician played continuously. Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32.

After 1 hour:

He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed and no one applauded. There was no recognition at all.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before, Joshua Bell sold-out a theatre in Boston where the seats averaged $100 each to sit and listen to him play the same music.

This is a true story. Joshua Bell, playing incognito in the DC Metro Station, was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people’s priorities.

This experiment raised several questions:

*In a common-place environment, at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty?

*If so, do we stop to appreciate it?

*Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be this:

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made . . …

Interesting Stuff – Dodgy Doll

Dodgy Doll15th September 2012 – For months now I have been driving past a house on Reid Road where a doll has been placed in various positions, in various states of attire including recently hanging off what appeared to be olympic rings. Finally curiosity got the better of me and I stopped and had the following conversation with Michael.

What was the idea behind the doll? Did you do this for your children?
“Nah, I don’t have any kids”.

Oh, so you did this for other people’s children?
“Nah, it was a piss take at mates, to start with, and then it just snowballed”.

You were saying that if the doll is not there, kids get upset.
“Yeah, they cry and carry on, so the parents have to reassure them. Next day I have to put the doll out again”.

And now its become a bit of a ritual, you have to get up every morning and put it in a different place and position?
“Yeah, I have adults that come past to see what the dolls doing. There’s a guy from a building company that has a collection of photos, as he’s made his way around work sites, doing trades as well”.

Oh, the doll has, lol?
“Yeah, he’s been driving bob cats and stuff. He has become a bit of a thing”.

Bit of a celebrity, really. And has doll got a name?
“Ahh no just dodgy doll”.

Dodgy Doll eh, well is Dodgy Doll a boy or a girl?
“Its a boy.”

Its a boy, oh well, he is quite skilled then, if he can drive all sorts of machinery.
“Yeah”

How old do you think he would be?
“I think he’s about 12 months.”

Only 12 months old? He looks like he’s had a rough life eh?
“Yes, he was cable tied to the top of an electrical service vehicle for a while”.

Oh, that would do it. Well he’s a bit of a snappy dresser.
“Yes, he does tend to get a bit flash, specially when he dresses up as a god”.

As a GOD? He does god too?
“Yeah, he does a few god type characters”.

Oh yeah, what’s his favourite character do you think?
“Ahh, it would have to be Hercules”.

Hercules, because he’s strong, sees himself as a bit of a “HE MAN” does he?
“Yes, he’s been Incredible Hulk, he’s been everything”.

Has he? So you painted him green?
“No covered him in green plastic. He’s been Zeus and Pegasus too”.

So there you have it, the story behind the doll. If you would like more information, contact us through our contact page or leave a comment below. Pictured here, he is “Spy Doll”.
