Police were actively involved throughout the campaign, working closely alongside Woodside.

Woodside was maintaining that humpback whales did not travel close to the shoreline, despite local observations suggesting otherwise to further their agenda to build a jetty to service the huge gas ships.

Woodside’s proposal for the Browse LNG gas hub at James Price Point included the construction of a jetty more than two kilometres long. The project also required hard, dense armour rock and high-grade aggregate to be transported from the Pilbara, as the local Broome sandstone was considered too soft and porous to withstand severe cyclonic conditions.

Because of the claims being made about whale movements, independent marine scientists and local whale watchers established a camp at Quandong to observe, record and monitor humpback whale activity along the coast. Their aim was to gather independent evidence showing that whales did, in fact, travel close to shore.

This is something many people in Broome are already familiar with. One of the remarkable features of the area is how close humpback whales can come to the coastline, with people regularly able to watch them breaching from local beaches.

The Whale Watcher depicted in the next video, spoke of the above incident on ABC Radio. The following morning, she attended the Manari Road Blockade for the first time. She was identified by Woodside Chief who attended the blockade along with Broome Police, as being, “the first to go today”. Link
